San Paolo d'Argon

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,386 · Postal code: 24060

Until the early twentieth century this village was called Buzzone: San Paolo d'Argon was the name of the monastery and its church, not of the settlement. Then the name of the abbey ended up taking the village as well. The Benedictine monastery, Cluniac in its foundation, was willed into being in 1079 by the Bergamo count Gisalberto, and for centuries it was the monks who administered the land around it; the abbey church was consecrated in 1198, while the two cloisters date from the early sixteenth century.

The town's coat of arms recalls a precise date, 1398: the Guelphs had been defeated and had abandoned the village, which the Ghibellines then sacked and set on fire. The bee flying above stands for the people who rebuilt it and went back to the fields. The comune too, in the twentieth century, was unmade and remade: in 1929 it was joined with Cenate Sopra and Cenate Sotto into a single body called Cenate d'Argon, and the three villages became separate again only in 1948.
