Cenate Sotto

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,494 · Postal code: 24069

The village was a single one, split into two boroughs by the Tadone torrent, and the two boroughs quarrelled. What gave the quarrel its final shape was Saint Charles Borromeo, who in 1575 set up a second parish on the other side of the stream: from that moment there were two Cenate, and the administrative separation was ratified in 1611. Matters did not end there. In 1927 Cenate Sotto, Cenate Sopra and San Paolo d'Argon were merged into a single municipality called Cenate d'Argon, and in 1948 they were divided into three again. A village split by a saint, sewn back together by a decree and split once more.

Three thousand four hundred and ninety-four inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, at the mouth of the Val Cavallina at the foot of Monte Misma. Above the built-up area stands the castle of the Lupi, which the Suardi had built for themselves and which Venice took from them in 1483 because the condottiero Guglielmo Suardi sided with the Visconti: it was assigned to Detesalvo Lupi, who stood with the Serenissima. In the municipal arms the Suardi lion and the Lupi lily stand side by side, the dispossessed and the man who profited.
