Costa di Mezzate

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,271 · Postal code: 24060

In 1927 Costa di Mezzate was merged with neighbouring Monticelli di Borgogna and out came a new municipality called Costa di Monticelli. The two split again in 1955, but neither took its own name back in full: Costa stayed Costa di Mezzate, while the other half renamed itself Montello in 1962, after the knoll behind it. Of the merger, today, not even the name survives. Above the houses, on the hilltop, stands the tower of the Zoppi, built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries to watch the distance and linked to the castle below.

That castle, today Camozzi-Vertova, holds art collections, and a legend runs about it: that on certain nights the footsteps of Garibaldi are heard there, who spent a short period in the castle. In the municipal arms is the castle with its walls, which served to defend the village during the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines. The parish church of San Giorgio was consecrated in 1528, and for the patron's feast, in the last week of April, the old quarter fills with street performers. Three thousand two hundred and seventy-one inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, at the mouth of the Val Cavallina.
