The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of Montello
📅 Every year, on 31 May
Montello celebrates the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 31 May, in the church dedicated to her.
This municipality fits into less than two square kilometres and is among the smallest in Italy by area. Its name too is recent: the village was called Monticelli di Borgogna, in 1927 it was merged with neighbouring Costa di Mezzate to form Costa di Monticelli, it regained its autonomy in 1955 and only in 1962 took its present name of Montello, that is little hill, from the knoll that stands behind it.
In the Monticelli-Brusati district there remain the ruins of the thirteenth-century castle of the Suardi, on top of which a villa has been built. The territory is crossed by the Zerra torrent and by the Borgogna channel, dug in 1473 by the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, which still today brings water to the western Bergamo plain; in the municipal arms are the castle wall, the mountains that close the village to the north and the three-arched bridge that spans the channel. In the village works Montello S.p.A., converted from a steelworks to the recovery of plastic and the composting of wet waste. Three thousand one hundred and seventy-three inhabitants.
