Calcinato

The old centre grew on the steeper of two rises above the fields, with the Chiese flowing to the west and separating Calcinatello from it. For a few dozen metres the boundary touches Castiglione delle Stiviere, in the province of Mantua. Mazza took the name from calcina, lime, for the quality of the ground; the form Calzinado is recorded in the thirteenth century.

In 1481 the head of the commune, Giovanni Maestri, had the church detached from the pieve of Pontenove and raised to a collegiate church, offering in exchange a house for the provost and canons and water to irrigate its benefice. In the early seventeenth century Giovanni da Lezze recorded a commune run by twenty-four consuls, two for each month, elected by the vicinia; the oldest known arms come from a seal of 1591, two crossed millet ears between two letters C for Comunitas Calcinati.
