Dello

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,576 · Postal code: 25020

Unlike the Oglio, the Mella has never served as a boundary: here it has joined rather than divided, and the villages of the area — Dello among them, and with it Castelmella, Corticelle, Offlaga and Manerbio — have extended their territory onto the far bank as well. The boundaries of Dello follow neither the river nor any other natural line: they are drawn by properties and by built works, that is, by the labour of men. In the documents the village is called Hello in the thirteenth century and Ellum in the fifteenth.

How big it was in the seventeenth century is told by the Catastico bresciano of Giovanni da Lezze: in 1610 Dello had two hundred families, about a thousand people; Corticelle had a hundred and Boldeniga some twenty. The same source also gives the names: the noble families of the area were the Fenaroli, the Prati and the Requiliani, while the peasant families who owned the land they worked were called Sandri and Ceruti. The comune, at that time, had a mill of its own.
