Bregnano

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,229 · Postal code: 22070

Bregnano lies on the edge of the Brianza and the Bassa Comasca, on morainic hills left by the glaciers of Lake Como; the Lura stream skirts it and names the valley park. A ninth-century document records the place as Beroniano. In the quarrels between Como and Milan the village had a castle, and an Alberico of Bregnano was among the Milanese captains who stood out at Montesordo in 1126; some thirty years later it became a fief of Ardizzone, bishop of Como.

The arms show a blue lion climbing a three-peaked mountain, gripping in its paws a staff with a forked red pennant. In 1751 the village was released from feudal tenure against a redemption payment. The castle's perimeter walls survive in the San Michele quarter, now in industrial use; at Puginate the size of the parish church is explained by the Humiliati convent that stood there before the order was suppressed. Near Cascina Menegardo was a museum of bees and honey, the only one in Italy: more than two thousand pieces gathered by Angelo Cappelletti over half a century, moved to Liguria in 2010.
