Abbadia Cerreto

Province: Lodi · Region: Lombardy · Population: 297 · Postal code: 26834

Abbadia Cerreto is the second Italian comune in alphabetical order: only Abano Terme comes before it, and Abbadia Lariana comes straight after. The village grew up around the abbey founded in 1084 by Alberic of Monte Cassino; the Benedictines were here, then from 1131 the Cistercians, and in 1798 it was suppressed. The name says the abbey and the cerri, the Turkey oaks of this countryside.

Of the abbey there remains the church of Saints Peter and Paul, in brick, with the octagonal tower planted over the crossing, right above the altar: the bell rope came down from up there. On the coat of arms is the monks' emblem, the crane with its vigilance, that is the stone the bird holds tight so as not to fall asleep on watch.
