Feast of San Pietro Martire
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of May
On the first Sunday of May Casaletto Ceredano, a municipality of 1,180 inhabitants in the province of Cremona, celebrates its patron San Pietro Martire.
In old documents the village is called Castelletto; its second name, Ceredano, comes from the abbey of Cerreto, which owned the land here and stands just over the boundary, in the municipality that took its name from the abbey. Casaletto Ceredano therefore bears the name of its landlord, not of its own place. The rest of its history is boundary arithmetic: between 1810 and 1816 the French attached to it the municipalities of Cascine San Carlo, Passarera and Rubbiano, which recovered their independence as soon as the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia arrived.
The last adjustment dates from 1937, and it was an even swap: the hamlet of Persia passed from Cavenago d'Adda to Casaletto, and in exchange Casaletto handed over the locality of Bastide to Cavenago. Two pieces of countryside bartered between two municipalities like two squares on a board. The coat of arms is older than the swap, granted by royal decree on 28 September 1929. This is a place better told from its edges than from its centre, out in the plain between the Adda and the Serio, where the names of the farmsteads weigh as much as those of the villages.
