In 1322 Anna Dovara, descended from Buoso da Duera, married Filippino Gonzaga. Out of that marriage, and after the troops of Cabrino Fondulo destroyed the fortress in 1405, the Dovara negotiated the village's entry into the Mantuan domain: the pact was signed in 1414. Isola thus found itself a Gonzaga enclave, with Milan to the south and west and Venice to the north.
Between 1587 and 1590 Giulio Cesare Gonzaga had the new arcaded square built, which is still the centre of the village. From there runs the road down to the ford on the Oglio, the one that led from Cremona to Asola and Lake Garda. Since 1967 the four districts have competed in the Palio, which re-enacts precisely the Gonzaga fifteenth century.
