Bascapè

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,715 · Postal code: 27010

The name comes from Basilica Petri: the pieve church of the diocese of Pavia around which the village took shape, and which held authority over Landriano and Cerro as well. The lords, here, were homegrown: the Bascapè held the fief for the entire duration of feudalism, which is anything but common; and from here probably came the family of Pietro da Barsegapè, who between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries wrote verse in the Milanese vernacular.

Today's comune is the sum of several vanished ones: in the eighteenth century Beccalzù and Casadeo, then Villarzino in 1842, Mangialupo and San Zeno e Foppa in 1867, Trognano in 1872. Of Trognano what remains above all is a name of art: the Master of Trognano, so called because a Nativity of his was kept in a local oratory. And in the countryside of Bascapè, on 27 October 1962, the aeroplane carrying Enrico Mattei, president of ENI, came down.
