Saints Peter and Paul and the Shrine of the Madonna della Costa

Cavenago d'Adda celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June.
The river moved a piece of the village. The hamlet of Persia, which belonged to Cavenago, found itself after a flood on the left bank of the Adda, and in 1937 it was assigned to Casaletto Ceredano: the municipality did not lose land by a political decision, but because the water changed its course. The rest of the story is tidier: already inhabited in Roman times, Cavenago belonged to the bishop of Lodi in the tenth century, then was a fief of the Fissiraga from 1297 to 1482, and in turn of the Bocconi, the Mozzanica, the Cavenaghi, the Colleoni and finally the Clerici. The coat of arms puts them together: the silver mitre for the bishops, the two blue bands of the Fissiraga, the black chevron of the marquises Clerici. "D'Adda" dates from 1863, to avoid confusion with Cavenago di Brianza; in 1869 Caviaga and Soltarico were added.
It was at Caviaga that, after the Second World War, Agip discovered important reserves of natural gas: under the maize fields of the Lodi lowland there was methane, and for a village of two thousand two hundred people that was big news. On the surface, though, Cavenago stayed as it was: the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo, neoclassical but with a Romanesque bell tower and an eighteenth-century altar; the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa on a rise just outside; the villas — Moavero, Gazzola, Greppi, the last of these neo-Gothic and of the late nineteenth century. And since 2004 there has been the museum of peasant life, called "Ciòca e Berlòca", on the first floor of the town hall.
