Sermide e Felonica

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,726 · Postal code: 46028

Sermide e Felonica has existed since 1 March 2017, when Felonica was absorbed into Sermide, which remains the seat of the council. The merger ended a separation of 201 years imposed by the Austrian authorities of Lombardy-Venetia on two towns with separate parishes. It is the easternmost comune of the province of Mantua and of all Lombardy, on a strip of land squeezed between Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, and the 45th parallel cuts through Sermide.

Sermide's old eighteenth-century arms bore two snakes entwined and upright in the grass, with Virgil's motto Latet hic anguis in herba: canting arms that play on the sound of the name and on the vegetation of the wetlands. The snakes survive in the new coat of arms, where a wavy silver band separates them from a silver eagle on red. In 1848 the townspeople and a company of Modenese volunteers drove off an attack by four hundred Austrians; in August General Walden took the town and burned it, and for those days Sermide was awarded a gold medal in 1899 among the towns honoured for the national Risorgimento.
