The village and the monastery of Santa Croce were at law with each other for at least two hundred years. The monastery had been built by the Augustinians at the end of the eleventh century, then passed to the Benedictines under the Este, and the monks stayed until the early eighteenth century, quarrelling all the while with the local people. In the shadow of that monastery, all the same, Salara grew.

The name comes from salt, which passed this way along a river, the Pestrina, still there today. Although the comune is in the Veneto, in the province of Rovigo, the dialect spoken here is Emilian, close to that of Ferrara: this is the Transpadana ferrarese, the part of Ferrara left on the far side of the Po. In May there is the strawberry festival, in September the donkey festival.
