Digging to enlarge the church of San Giovanni Battista brought up a necropolis, and what said whose bones they were was the way they had been laid out: in parallel rows, not scattered as the Romans did it. They were Lombards. The church, tradition says, was founded by queen Theodolinda in 613.
The name may come from a Caesius, the veteran the land was assigned to, and «Boscone» from the woods that surrounded the village; the votive altar to Jupiter found under the parish house now stands in front of the church. Cesano was the mother parish of thirty-two churches, then it emptied out: 345 inhabitants in 1798, 654 in 1861. Today there are 23,398.
