Cusago

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,597 · Postal code: 20090

On the twenty-eighth of January 1494 Ludovico il Moro gave Cusago to his wife Beatrice d'Este, and it was not a title he gave her: the deed includes the castle, the strongholds, the mero et mixto imperio, every kind of jurisdiction, the right to appoint castellans, magistrates and officers and to enjoy the revenues. The duchess found herself absolute mistress of a village and all its farmland. Filippo Maria Visconti, before her, had already made this castle his country residence, and il Moro brought foreign princes and ambassadors here so that they might see how rich the duchy was.

Three thousand five hundred and ninety-seven inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan. With the sale of the castle to the Stampa of Soncino the village went back to being an agricultural centre like any other: that family came to own almost twelve thousand pertiche out of the roughly fifteen thousand of the commune, that is four fifths of the territory. In 1572, when at Carlo Borromeo's request the first registers of souls were compiled, 525 were counted at Cusago: 273 in the village and 252 in the surrounding farmsteads.
