Ossona

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,134 · Postal code: 20010

At the beginning of the seventeenth century the inhabitants of Ossona, worn down by the commune's debts, decided to put their own freedom up for auction: they offered themselves to any feudal lord at all, so long as the accounts could be settled. Nobody bought them. They had to lower the price further, marking down the value in lire assigned to each household, and only in September 1650 did the marquis Vercellino Maria Visconti buy the fief for 2360 lire. From then on the history of Ossona was tied to the Visconti until 1794, when the last heir died and the fief returned to the state of Milan.

Four thousand one hundred and thirty-four inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan. The village has lost and regained its independence twice: in 1811 it was attached to Arluno and got it back in 1815, then on the twenty-fourth of February 1869 it was abolished and joined to Casorezzo. It seemed to be going well until, in 1887, Casorezzo refused to contribute to the cost of the entrance to Ossona's cemetery: from there the arrangement soured, a petition to the ministry in 1890 got nowhere, and the separation came only on the tenth of June 1909, partly because by then both villages had reached the 1500 inhabitants the law required to stand on their own.
