Casorezzo

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,355 · Postal code: 20010

The name of Casorezzo — which in the documents has been Casobrecio, Caxorizio, Coxoretio and more besides — is said to come from the Latin Domus retium, "house of the nets". The place seems to have earned it: in 1009 there stood here a wooden castle with four towers, surrounded by a moat and closed in by woods, which the Milanese patricians used as a country house for hunting and fishing. Within its walls stood the church of San Giorgio, and today's parish church was built on the ruins of that castle.

In 1869 the neighbouring comune of Ossona was suppressed and attached to Casorezzo, which at the time had more inhabitants. The two communities got on well enough until 1887, when Casorezzo refused to pay its share for the entrance to the cemetery of Ossona: from there grew a rivalry that went through petitions to the ministry and ended in 1909, when a royal decree separated them again. By then both had reached fifteen hundred inhabitants, the minimum the law required to stand on their own.
