Saint Margaret, patron of the land of the Montagnola
📅 Every year, on the first Monday of July
Usmate Velate celebrates Saint Margaret on the first Monday of July.
Usmate Velate is Œuss Velàa in the Brianza dialect, and the first word comes from the Osio counts, lords here under Spanish rule: the village was sometimes called Osio. Gian Paolo Osio of that family, the seducer of the nun of Monza whom Manzoni recalls in The Betrothed, was summoned over a crime and never appeared; the castle of Usmate, where he was thought to be hiding, was razed to the foundations in 1608.
The arms stack the shields of the families that held power here: the hammer between two wings of the Ala and Ponzone, the three silver stars of the Osio, the silver and red chequy of the Barbiano di Belgioioso. Velate, given by king Berengar I to the Chapter of Monza in 920, was then Velate Milanese; Usmate joined it in 1869 as a formerly separate comune, and only in 1930 did the seat move and the name reach its present form.
