Busnago

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,413 · Postal code: 20874

The name Busnago first turns up at the foot of a document about something else: in 873 the deed by which Ansperto, archbishop of Milan, took possession of property at Cavenago was authenticated by witnesses, one of whom signed as Rotecario de Buvonaco, that is, of Busnago. The village lies between the Adda to the east and the Molgora to the south-west; its arms show, on silver, a red lion holding a single-towered castle in its forepaws, for the medieval castle that once stood here.

Religious life began early: a Benedictine nunnery dedicated to Saint Peter in the twelfth century, then in 1344 a house of Humiliati nuns at the Corteana farmstead, under the Santa Margherita monastery in Monza; the little church is still there, hardly ever used. In 1595 the first Status Animarum, the parish register, counted 339 souls. When Fascism arrived, twelve of the fifteen town councillors resigned in protest, and in 1931 squadristi killed Angelo Ripamonti, who kept the village inn.
