Cilavegna

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,656 · Postal code: 27024

The name of Cilavegna still says what the place was: cella, the store of provisions for the military supply, and vegna, the vines. The castrum of cella ad vineas stood between the via Galliana and the road to Vercelli, and served to supply the soldiers passing through. The form Cilavinnis appears in a grant of King Berengar I, undated but earlier than 915, and over the centuries the name went on wavering between masculine and feminine: Celavegna, Cellavegna, Cillavegna, Celavegno, Cellavigna.

The wine of those days has given way to pink asparagus, but water has remained the subject of the village: the countryside is a close net of canals and ditches fed by springs. Where that water was to come from was settled by a law, the Super aquis derivandis et conducendis issued by Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza in 1483: the canals of Cilavegna had to draw from the Sesia and not from the nearer Agogna, because the waters of the Agogna were reserved for Mortara.
