At Ferrera Erbognone one of the last ice houses left in this part of the Lomellina survives: an underground chamber where the slabs and blocks of ice cut from the streams and marshes round about were packed, and where the coolness of the ground kept them long enough to allow food to be preserved. This is the plain of rice fields and farmsteads, and one of those farmsteads was even a municipality: in the eighteenth century the Confalonera was one, together with the older Cascina Ardizzi, and both followed the fortunes of Ottobiano until in 1806 they were joined to this comune.
The village was for centuries an appendage of Sannazzaro de' Burgondi: it probably belonged to the Sannazzaro nobles from the year one thousand, followed their fief when it passed to the Malaspina in 1466 and was still united to Sannazzaro at the beginning of the seventeenth century, becoming autonomous around the middle of it. The second name, that of the Erbognone stream, it took in 1863. Today it shares with Sannazzaro one of the most important refineries in Europe, and within its own boundaries it houses the Green Data Center where ENI installed the supercomputer HPC4, the largest in Italy when it came into service. Between the ice house and the computing centre there are a few minutes of road.
