Ottobiano

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,181 · Postal code: 27030

The name appears as early as 876, written Ocio de Octabiano, and probably comes from a fundus Octavianum, the estate of someone of the gens Octavia: a very common pattern in the romanised plain, even if here no document proves that family was actually present. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 in the Vatican palaces the village appears mangled as Datlibaio.

In 1976, while an area near the Rotorta farmstead was being cleared of trees, a Roman cemetery of about forty graves came to light, from the second half of the first century before Christ to the first century after: it is one of the most important Roman finds in the Lomellina. In the village cemetery, on the other hand, there is something from the twentieth century you would not expect: the Vitale funerary chapel, designed by the rationalist architect Piero Bottoni.
