Cerro al Lambro

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,956 · Postal code: 20070

The name comes from a tree, the turkey oak, an oak that yields fine timber — barrels were made of it, and spokes for wheels, and charcoal — and which grew in abundance on the banks of the Lambro along with hornbeams, birches, poplars and maples. On the town's coat of arms there is indeed a golden turkey oak on a green field. The al Lambro was added in 1862, after the unification of Italy, so as not to confuse it with the other four places called Cerro scattered about the peninsula.

With neighbouring Riozzo the relationship turned upside down within seventy years: in 1809 it was Cerro that was abolished and attached to Riozzo, while in 1878 it was Riozzo that was abolished and attached to Cerro. In the little church of San Rocco, which stands in Riozzo, a fourteenth-century Madonna and Child is kept, and a painting recalling the procession held in Rome in the year 590 to make the plague cease, the one in which, so the story goes, the archangel Michael appeared.
