Galliavola

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 213 · Postal code: 27034

Galliavola and nearby Gallia come from the same property: two Roman farming estates of the Gallius family, which appear in the documents as Gallia and Galliabula. The village belonged to the county of Lomello and in 1164 passed under Pavia; the lordship went to the Capitani di Grumello, confirmed in their holdings in 1464 and then split into several branches, who held the fief until the seventeenth century.

The fief passed to the Lambertenghi, and one of them, having entered the Society of Jesus, left it in 1660 to the Jesuits of Brera in Milan; when the order was suppressed, it was taken over by the state. In the eighteenth century Galliavola absorbed two neighbouring municipalities, Schivanoia and Grumello, which had always formed a single fief with it: of the first, whose name is said to mean a place of delights, a farmstead remains, while Grumello, which had given the local lords their surname, has vanished altogether. The coat of arms, granted in 2008, carries their lion and sprigs of rice.
