Bormio

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,036 · Postal code: 23032

The "Baths of Bormio" were known to the ancients — Pliny mentions them — and the rock-cut pools of the Bagni Vecchi, water at 37 degrees and the valley below, remain a thermal experience unique in the Alps. The medieval town, with frescoed palaces and its clock tower, was an obligatory stage between Venice and the Grisons.

Sport did the rest: the Stelvio piste is among the World Cup's most technical descents, and in 2026 Bormio hosted the Olympic men's alpine skiing events. In summer the Stelvio pass and its 48 hairpins are a cycling mecca: the mountains here know no low season.
