Livigno

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,976 · Postal code: 23030

"Little Tibet" sits at 1,816 metres in a valley that snow kept isolated for centuries: to keep it inhabited, empires granted it customs exemption — a privilege that survives, making Livigno Italy's only duty-free town, with fuel and shopping at surprising prices. Snow, guaranteed November to May, did the rest.

In 2026 it hosted the Olympic freestyle and snowboard events: its Mottolino and Carosello slopes are temples of young sport. In summer, the lake and the passes — Forcola and Bernina next door — turn it into a bike and trail paradise. The "sciatt", a buckwheat-and-cheese fritter, rewards everything.
