A diploma issued by Emperor Charlemagne in 803 provides the earliest documented record of a baptismal church in Bormio. Located at Piazza Cavour 18, the collegiate church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius stands as the primary religious building in the town. After suffering damage from Swiss troops in 1620 and complete destruction by Spanish forces in 1621, the modern church was reconstructed between 1628 and 1641 following plans by architect Gaspare Aprile da Lugano.
What to see
The exterior opens onto a small churchyard enclosed by a masonry parapet. Divided into two orders by a horizontal belt course, the main façade features pilasters framing a large neoclassical portal and ends in a prominent triangular pediment. Inside, notable furnishings include a 1646 wooden ciborium and a 19th-century organ by Luigi Parietti of Bergamo. The barrel-vaulted presbytery contains two 1721 canvases by Giuseppe Prina depicting the Martyrdom of Saints Gervasius and Protasius and the Translation of Their Relics. Another significant piece is the canvas representing the Triumph of Liturgical Music, executed between 1666 and 1678 by Carlo Marni alongside Paolo Colberg and Baldassarre Rocca. Along the vaulted ceiling of the corridor connecting the sacristy to the rectory are 1393 frescoes depicting Christ Pantocrator, the Nursing Madonna, apostles, and prophets, which are among the oldest surviving paintings in Bormio.
Visiting
The church served as the historic head of an extensive alpine vicariate overseeing neighboring valley parishes. Restoration work was conducted on its bell tower in 1927. In past liturgical tradition, the large 17th-century painting depicting liturgical music was deployed specifically during Lent to cover the organ while the instrument remained silent.
