Brusimpiano

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,208 · Postal code: 21050

Between the twenty-seventh and the twenty-eighth of August 1848 Giuseppe Garibaldi, fleeing towards Switzerland after facing the Austrians at Morazzone, slept at Brusimpiano with a few faithful men. It was the villagers who got him out, ferrying him across Lake Lugano to Agno.

The coat of arms reads like a list: the red tower is that of the Torriani, who held the place before the Visconti; the fish is the fishing that was the economy here; the sheep is Ardena, the shepherds' hamlet that used to be a municipality of its own and was annexed twice, in 1809 and in 1928. Of the remoter past there remain a Gallo-Roman burial ground and a Gallic tomb with a name carved on it, Kasikos, in north Etruscan letters.
