Feast of Saint Michael
📅 Every year, on 8 May
On 8 May Gagliole, a municipality of 655 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patron Saint Michael; on the last weekend of July a medieval historical re-enactment is held.
Gagliole has kept its medieval plan: the fourteenth-century walls and castle, and only two gates to get in, the main one with its depressed pointed arch and the one they call Porta Zingarina. In the old documents the village appears as Castrum Galli. The fortress was built by the Da Varano of Camerino as soon as they took the territory, because these hills were disputed with the Smeducci of Sanseverino: today the sandstone base of the tower and the circuit of the walls remain.
Outside the village there are two churches worth the walk. The Madonna della Pieve, built entirely of sandstone blocks, was the parish church of San Zenone: a sixteenth-century fresco of the Madonna and Child changed its name, and above the door it once bore the arms of the Lateran basilica, on which it depended. The hermitage of the Madonna delle Macchie, near the boundary with San Severino, has a large chapel that was originally a portico for receiving pilgrims, with the Assumption painted behind the altar, and a smaller, older one that holds a Madonna of the Milk. In the little church of San Giuseppe, built against the walls, there is instead a fresco by Giovanni Andrea De Magistris of 1530.
