Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Macerata Feltria celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel; the village also preserves the Torre di Cerignano.
The name is an inventory of rubble. On the flat below the village stood Pitinum Pisaurense, a Roman town that lived by timber; the Ostrogoths destroyed it in the sixth century. In the eleventh, with the stones of that ruin, people raised the castle that still stands: and the new place kept the name of what had served to build it, the rubble.
In the Middle Ages Macerata belonged to the Malatesta of Rimini: a Malatesta island inside Montefeltro land. At the end of the nineteenth century Filippo Belli built on the Apsa a palace with a silkworm house and a spinning mill beside it, for silk. After the last war half the village left, nearly all of them for Genoa.
