Monte Grimano Terme

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 1,166 · Postal code: 61010

The Marche touch the Republic of San Marino at a single point, and this is the point: since San Leo in 2009 and Sassofeltrio in 2021 passed to the province of Rimini, Monte Grimano Terme has remained the only comune of the Marche bordering the Republic. In 962 the emperor Otto I had granted these castles in fief to Ulderico di Carpegna.

The «Terme» in the name arrived in 2002, ten years after the referendum in which the inhabitants had asked for it: the sulphurous water comes out of the slopes of Monte San Paolo. At the highest point of the village stands the fifteenth-century civic tower, eighteen metres high; inside, on the first and second floors, are the bookcrossing shelves, and around the village the lilac boxes where books are left and taken.
