Feast of Saint Apollinaris
📅 Every year, on 23 July
On 23 July Mercatino Conca, a municipality of 1,108 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, celebrates its patron Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna (sant'Apollinare).
Until 1940 the village was called Piandicastello; then it took its name from the market and from the Conca torrent, which in summer is left without water. In 1462 Federico da Montefeltro conquered and destroyed it; then he received it in fief, and as its lord rebuilt the fortifications he had just pulled down.
In the sixteenth century it changed masters three times in a few decades: Cesare Borgia, Venice, then Rimini again; with the restoration of 1815 it ended up in the legation of Urbino. On the coat of arms, granted in 1962, are the bridge over the torrent and three bees, which stand for the local factories. The territory is in the Marche but belongs to historical Romagna, and in the village Romagnolo is spoken.
