Sestino

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,421 · Postal code: 52038

Sestino is the easternmost municipality in Tuscany, and it lies in the Montefeltro: geographically it belongs to the Foglia valley, which is almost entirely in the Marche. It is Tuscan because of a decision taken in Rome: in 1520 Pope Leo X assigned it to the republic of Florence, and the regional boundary has taken this bend ever since. In 1566 Cosimo I began building a fortress town on the Sasso di Simone, the block of limestone that closes the horizon, to keep the grand duchy safe from the dukes of Urbino.

Before all this, Sestino was a Roman town. In the first century before Christ the Romans made it a municipium with a forum, a curia and baths, because the roads for the Marche, Tuscany and Romagna crossed here; what remains of it is in the national Antiquarium. The parish church of San Pancrazio was built over the Roman curia, and its sandstone altar, of 1259, rests on a Roman cippus of 374. Until 1779 the archpriest of this church answered to no bishop and exercised a bishop's powers himself over the churches of the district.
