Acquaviva Collecroce

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 674 · Postal code: 86030

The village belonged to the Order of Malta until 1785, and the knights' cross is still on the church doorway: Santa Maria Ester was refounded in 1715 on the old structure, and it is the only church in the village.

In Molise Croatian the village is called Živavoda Kruč, and the Slav language is still spoken here: the ancestors arrived between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, perhaps from the Neretva valley. In 1911 there were over two thousand residents; today 674. In the fields grow the small dark zerniza figs, fennel and white celery.
