Montecilfone

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,423 · Postal code: 86032

The name took five hundred years to settle: Mons Gilliani in 1102, Castrum Gylphoni in 1309, Mons Filfonis in 1325, Moncelfoni in 1328, and only in 1608 does Montecilfone appear.

In the Corundoli wood, in 1276, there was a grange of the Knights of Malta, guarding their holdings; of that wood eighty hectares remain. The town is one of the four Arbëresh comuni of Molise: the Albanian families arrived after the earthquake of 1456 and repopulated the ruined villages. On 16 August 2018 the earthquake came back, with its epicentre right here: damage and collapses, but nobody hurt. There are 1,423 residents.
