Castelmauro

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,638 · Postal code: 86031

Since 2008 there has been an astronomical observatory above the town, at 1,042 metres, named after Giovanni Boccardi, the astronomer born here: it has a robotised telescope with a sixty-centimetre mirror.

Until 1885 the comune of 1,638 residents was called Castelluccio Acquaborrana. In the church of San Leonardo the medieval façade has stayed set into the baroque one, to the left of the Gothic bell tower, and of the old front the frieze and the rose window remain. Palazzo Cantelmo was the thirteenth-century castle, later turned into a residence in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. To the west spreads a great beech wood, on the slopes of Monte Mauro.
