Palata

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,769 · Postal code: 86037

In 1531, after the earthquake and the Ottoman raids, it was Slav families fleeing the Turkish empire who put the half-abandoned town back on its feet: the church of Santa Maria La Nova dates from that year, and has remained its emblem.

Of the medieval centre, brought down by the earthquake, a few houses remain and the round tower of the ducal palace. The title of duke of Palata, granted in 1646 to Francesco Toraldo, passed to his daughter Francesca, who in 1681 sailed for Peru: her husband had been made viceroy. In the church the high altar is of stucco worked to imitate marble, made by master Gregorio da Palata in 1725. There are 1,769 residents.
