Tavenna

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 815 · Postal code: 86030

In the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, finished in 1773, an inscription speaks of Illirici gens: the people of Tavenna. The village was repopulated in the mid-sixteenth century with Slav families called in by the Aragonese to an empty countryside, and in Molise Croatian it was called Tàvela.

In 1861, at the first census of the Kingdom of Italy, the old people still spoke the language; from the twentieth century nobody has, unlike the three villages next door. Since 2017, though, Tavenna is officially a linguistic-minority comune again. There are 815 residents, and many of those who left ended up in Argentina, Brazil, the United States.
