Gildone

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 850 · Postal code: 86010

In the church of San Sabino there is a plaque thanking the Gildonesi of Cleveland: it was they who paid for the restoration in 1923. A great many left: in Montreal the people of Gildone and their descendants outnumber those who stayed, 850 of them, and they keep up the August feast of the Madonna delle Grazie.

The name, they say, comes from the Lombard gildonie, the brotherhoods that banded together to help villages burnt out or struck by disaster. The village too was born that way, of people from elsewhere: those from the fiefs of Quadrano and Sant'Andrea, who had fought until they burned each other's hamlets, and those who came down from the farms to escape the Saracens.
