Three kilometres out of town, at Faifoli, stood an abbey where around 1230 Pietro da Morrone studied and took his vows: he would become Pope Celestine V, the one who resigned after a few months. The church had grown on the temples of Fagifulae, the Samnite town that rebelled against Rome and whose paving still surfaces just outside the built-up area.

The village is said to have been born in 1039, when the princes of Benevento Pandolfo and Landolfo signed the Montagano parchment recognising it as free. The name would come from montis and from the Greek aganòs, beautiful mountain; the three hills on the coat of arms are the quarters of its 1,150 residents, and the cross is the mother church, built on the highest one.
