On 1 August Castellino del Biferno, a municipality of 589 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, celebrates its patron San Pietro in Vincoli.
They call it the village that moves: the sandstone ridge Castellino stands on has been slipping, slowly and steadily, for centuries. In 1930 the fascist government expropriated seventeen hectares of flat land from the neighbouring comune and built Castellino Nuovo on it, where everyone was supposed to move. About seventy people live there; the rest stayed up on the ridge.
The village first appears in a document of 1011, the gift of the church of Santa Iusta to the abbey of Montecassino: in 2011 its 589 inhabitants celebrated a thousand years. The lanes are still called rughe, the narrow alleys from which boiling oil was tipped onto besiegers.
