Casacalenda

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 2,207 · Postal code: 86043

In the winter of 217 BC, Polybius tells us, the Roman army camped at Kalene to keep an eye on Hannibal, who was at Gerione: Kalene is Casacalenda, and Gerione is now one of its hamlets.

The town falls into two parts: the Terravecchia, the old elliptical core, and the Terranova, which grew on the Carmine plain. Beside the church of the Addolorata stands the Duke's Fountain, which Scipione di Sangro gave over to public use in 1645. Outside the built-up area is the convent of Sant'Onofrio, of 1407, with its frescoed cloister and twenty-five cells. Since the war many have left for Montreal and Toronto; today there are 2,207 residents.
