Bonefro

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,528 · Postal code: 86041

Tradition tells of pilgrims who set out from Venafro towards Puglia and were set upon by brigands right here: the men turned into stones, the women into doves. The place is still called chajedonne, the weeping of the women.

The town's name, more prosaically, comes from Binifri, that is from the Latin Vinifer, land that makes wine: so it is written in a document of 1049. On top of the spur, at the entrance to the Terra Vecchia, stand the Lombard castle of the mid-tenth century and the church of Santa Maria delle Rose; of the walls four gates remain. In 2002 Bonefro was one of the epicentres of the Molise earthquake. There are 1,528 residents.
