Near the abbey of Casalpiano, where a Roman villa stood, an inscription came to light: a freedman praying to the gods for his mistress's safe return home, having escaped the disaster of Pompeii. The villa was built in the second century BC and abandoned in the fifth.
The abbey, on the Celano-Foggia drove road, already belonged to Montecassino in 1017; the 1456 earthquake brought it down and it was rebuilt beside, but three apses of the old church remain intact. The village's name, 648 residents, comes from murex, the pointed rock — though the arms show five ears of wheat, for the other etymology, the one people prefer.
