Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Provvidenti celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the small Molise town also hosts the MAACK, an open-air contemporary art museum.
The name comes from the pits: the gully below was always the right place to dig grain stores, and those who came to put their harvest away called it Provvidentiae. Legend raises the stakes and has the village standing on the granary of Gerione, the Italic town where, according to Polybius, Hannibal camped.
In 1911, with farming going well, Provvidenti reached 1,008 inhabitants. Then war and emigration — many to Montreal, which still has an association of Provvidenti families — emptied it out: there are 122 people now, the smallest comune in the province of Campobasso.
