In 1795 the villagers had had enough of the castle moat, which cut the place in two: to get from Civita di sopra to Civita di sotto you had to wait for the drawbridge to come down. They knocked the retaining wall in and filled the moat, and the road that came of it still runs along the north side of the castle.
Four years later this village gave the Neapolitan revolution of 1799 both Vincenzo Cuoco and Gabriele Pepe, born here. Civitacampomarano now has 451 residents and, since 2016, the walls of its old houses covered in murals by a street art festival that draws thousands every summer.
