For a century people believed what a late nineteenth-century scholar, Gennaro Piedimonte, had written about the origin of the name. In 2019 somebody went back to the documents: in the tithe rolls of 1308 the village is Licetum, and in the Angevin registers it is Lucitum prope Calcabuccacium. Not much is left of the romantic lucus, the sacred wood.
The lords came and went as elsewhere — Marchisio, Di Sangro, Piscicelli, Capecelatro — and in the cathedral of Naples, inside the basilica of Santa Restituta, the Piscicelli chapel still keeps plaques that name Lucito. The village, 734 residents, grew in 1811, when it was also given the lands of Ferrara, the fief next door.
