Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Lupara celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the municipal territory includes the Colle Zampitti hill.
There are three explanations for the village's name and none of them wins: the wolves that once worked these fields, a herb called luparia, or the pagan rite in honour of the god Lupercus. Luparia was the name around the year 1000, when the hill above the Biferno carried the castle of Ugone Marchisio.
Little of the castle is left, and the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Assunta was part of it. The church, consecrated in 1694, holds a baptismal font of 1544 carved with the sacraments, but it has been closed since the earthquake of 2002. Down in the ravine the old watermill still stands, which the 538 residents call ù m'l'niell'.
