Castelbottaccio

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 349 · Postal code: 86030

In a document of 1148 the village is called Calcabuttaccio: a crag ringed by a bottaccio, a ditch full of water. Over the centuries the name wore down to Castelbottaccio — spelt that way in a deed of February 1767 — and at that point somebody took the word literally: the municipal coat of arms carries a barrel.

From the highest point, Colle Iannone at 717 metres, you can see Abruzzo and you can see the sea: on clear days the Tremiti islands appear, ninety kilometres out. Here, in the palace of the baroness Olimpia Frangipane, the Molise intellectuals who would make the Neapolitan revolution of 1799 used to meet. The population today is 349.
